CLIENT PROJECTS - STRIDE E-LEARNING
(Career as a Preview)

Stride is a learning company, that helps learners of all ages reach their full potential through inspired teaching and personalized learning. They do this by providing clear pathways for learners to expand their skills, explore their options, and change their lives.

CaaP - CAREER AS A PREVIEW

WHO IS IT FOR?

CaaP is for high school and post-secondary students and adults interested in pursuing a new career path that may not require a college degree.

WHAT IS IT?

CaaP offers courses that lead to certification in specific fields. The goal is for our student to get that certification and immediately find work in that field.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The user takes an assessment, is given detailed information about the professions and related courses, etc. and they’re offered up these Career Previews in case they are unfamiliar with the field/job recommended for them.

“Career Previews are not only a trial or preview of the courses, they should be a “compelling” and “authentic” simulation.”

PROBLEM STATEMENT

  • High-school students often feel confused about the profession they want to pursue.

  • Stride platform is offering them a lot of job opportunities to focus on but they don’t know which one to focus on.

  • When they check the courses, for them to commit to learn more about that profession and get a course about it, they need to understand what the profession offers to them.

  • The introduction should not be boring or in a standard course structure.

  • It has to inspire the students and at the same time it has to give the students correct information about the profession because the goal is to inform them in a fun way.

SOLUTION HYPOTHESIS SCOPE

Short Career Previews for Each Course: Each career will have their short information section and one gamified task activity.
E-learning Design Tool: We will use an e-learning tool called Adobe Captivate to quickly publish the career previews.
Consistent Design System: Each career preview should follow the same visual language.

INITIAL LIMITATIONS

Lack of user research: There was only one research at the beginning of the project.
Use existing and changing design system: We were designing and implementing previews during Stride’s migration to Tallo.
Adobe’s Captivate Limitations: Learning the tool and the limitations of the tool itself.

ACTION ITEMS

  • Is it’s own Branching activity (self contained Captivate file)

  • Has a Launch page from the player

  • Has an Intro/Are Your Ready scrolling layout which has buttons leading to Content, Task, or Back to CaaP

  • Short duration

  • Focus on a single learning objective

  • Being independent, and part of a whole

  • Responsive nature

  • Establish a consistent Look & Feel based on the current Design System.

  • Build the Previews in Adobe’s Captivate.

  • Understand Captivate’s Technical Limitations and push the app to its limits.

  • Provide immediate feedback.

  • Use storytelling to make the subject matter more interesting and relatable.

SCOPE

Changing Timeline: 3 months at the beginning, then the time and scope was expanded to a full year.
Increasing the scope: From MVP (9 Preview Courses at the beginning) to 27 total at the end of the project.

METHODOLOGY

  1. Initial Exploration

  2. User Interviews and Usability test

  3. Research Analysis

  4. Structure Discovery

  5. Prototyping

  6. Implementation

  7. QA

  8. Publishing Preview Courses

INITIAL EXPLORATION

We used stakeholders feedback and designs from the client as a starting point to explore an initial Look and Feel that was consistent with the current Design System used in the CaaP Platform.

Two workflows to test...

Linear Flow:

Is a step by step way to deliver information, try a simple activity and finally give users Next steps.

Linear Flow.png

Microlearning Flow:

On the other hand, we give the activity to the user with the ability to explore fo themselves extra information in the UI in case they need it. Once they are ready with the activity, they can move to Next Steps.

USABILITY TEST FINDINGS

The research conducted by the internal UX Researcher on client’s side found:

Findings.png

“I wish I had this website earlier in high school so it would help me figure out what I want to do”

“I feel like this is a great workflow for somebody who wants to take things one by one, like they want to learn how to do the routers first, then want to learn how to do barriers. Instead of trying to figure out how to do all of them at once.”

THE PROCESS

STORYBOARD

Instructional Designers would create a storyboard file in Goggle Docs with the contents and activity for a particular Career Preview. Once we had a good idea of the contents of the storyboard, we would work collaboratively with the Instructional Designer and the rest of the team to understand the contents of the storyboard, brainstorm ideas with quick prototyping in Figma and translate them into a UI that makes sense for the entire team.

GAMIFICATION

As part of the Career Previews UX/UI Design, we created gamified activities as much as possible, so users could have fun while discovering the career and be able to put themselves in a position to practice that career.

IMPLEMENTATION & QA

Once we had the designs from the prototype approved, we would continue implementing them into Captivate, on its different breakpoints (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile), implementing the interactions needed and publishing them for QA, where the courses would be reviewed and getting back to us if there were any issues we needed to address.

PUBLISHING

Once the published files in QA passed all the reviews, the Career Previews were Published on the CaaP website, so now they were ready to be used by our students.
